Protecting planet Earth may not be easy for some but it is also hard to live on a planet while suffering from destructible climate change. Many factors contribute to the drastic changes in climate which affect the lives of people, plants, and animals that inhabit the planet.
Since the late 19th century, Earth’s average surface condition rose to 2°F due to the increase in the accumulation of carbon dioxide. In addition, human-induced emissions contribute to the build-up in the atmosphere. Majority of the warming the planet has experienced happened during the past 35 years. Much of the rise in the temperature was absorbed by the oceans. Its top 700 meters suggests heating up of 0.302°F since 1969.
Ice sheets from Greenland and Antarctic reduced in area. Based on NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment reveals that Greenland has lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometers of ice every year from 2002 and 2006. Antarctica, on the other hand, dropped about 152 cubic kilometers of ice from 2002 and 2005.
So, what can you do to help save the planet?
Be a vegetarian at times. Do you know that to make a pound of beef requires 2,500 gallons of water? For every burger that you eat, you are saving the destruction of almost 55 square feet of a forest where animals graze.
Recycling cell phones. You may not believe it but recycling your phone is possible. An average device user replaces his phone every 18 months just to be with the trend or because of the new features. If 130 million devices are discarded every year, think of how many toxins from battery leaks will get into the soil and cause contamination?
Drive less. It may sound absurd especially when you are in a hurry. But think of the benefits that less driving can do for you. First, it’s a form of exercise which builds up your stamina and strengthens your legs. Second, you are saving on fuel. Third, you are reducing the emission of harmful smoke into the atmosphere. Does that make sense?
Planting trees. Planting trees in your backyard would be more than such a great idea. You are not only planting for food, shelter, and to have some fresh air. You are also helping the planet heal itself.
Smart shopping. When you shop at supermarkets or greengrocers, do not forget to bring a basket, a recyclable plastic bag, or a woven bag to carry your goods. This will reduce the need to produce more unrecyclable plastics and containers that will only end up in landfills and oceans.
